Listing Day Rules: Pre-Open Call Auction, Circuit Limits & Trading Hours

On the morning an IPO lists on the NSE and BSE (T+3 business days after closing), trading does not begin like normal stocks at 9:15 AM. Instead, the exchanges execute a dedicated Special Pre-Open Call Auction Session to discover a single fair opening price driven purely by real-time demand and supply.

The Listing Morning Timeline (9:00 AM – 10:00 AM IST)

  • 9:00 AM – 9:45 AM (Order Entry & Modification): Market participants, institutional desks, and retail allotted holders can enter, modify, or cancel buy and sell orders. No actual trades are executed during this period. The system calculates an indicative equilibrium price dynamically based on matching volumes.
  • 9:45 AM – 9:55 AM (Order Matching & Price Discovery): Order entry is frozen. The exchange algorithm matches buy and sell orders to determine the official Listing Price where maximum volume clears. All matching trades are executed at this single equilibrium price.
  • 9:55 AM – 10:00 AM (Buffer Interval): Transition window preparing for continuous trading.
  • 10:00 AM Onwards: Regular continuous trading commences on the exchange matching engine.

Listing Day Circuit Limits & Price Bands

To prevent extreme market manipulation, SEBI enforces tailored price bands on Day 1 based on the issue price:

  • Mainboard IPOs with Issue Price > ₹100: During the 9:00 AM – 9:45 AM pre-open session, there is no upper or lower circuit cap. The price discovers freely. Once the opening price is determined at 9:45 AM, a ±20% circuit limit (or ±10% for certain surveillance categories) applies to continuous trading throughout the rest of the day.
  • Mainboard IPOs with Issue Price ≤ ₹100: A fixed ±20% price band applies right from the pre-open session itself.
  • SME IPOs (NSE Emerge / BSE SME): SEBI enforces a strict ±90% cap on listing day gains during the pre-open auction. Once listed, continuous trading operates under strict 5% or 10% daily circuit filters.

Trade-to-Trade (T2T) Segment Mandate

Certain IPOs are placed by exchanges in the Trade-to-Trade (T2T / 'T' or 'ST' series) segment for the first 10 trading sessions. In this segment:

  1. No Intraday Trading: You cannot buy and sell on the same day for margin netting.
  2. 100% Delivery: Every purchase requires 100% upfront cash payment, and every sale requires actual physical delivery of shares from your demat account.

Yes. You can place limit buy or sell orders through your broker terminal just like institutional participants. If your sell limit is at or below the discovered equilibrium price, it will execute at the discovered listing price.

Can I use Stop-Loss Market (SL-M) orders on listing day?

Most stockbrokers disable market orders and SL-M orders during the pre-open call auction and the first 15 minutes of listing day to prevent flash crashes and severe execution slippage.
